1,131,683. High vacuum pumps. AIR REDUCTION CO. Inc. Sept. 20, 1966 [Sept. 20, 1965], No. 41984/66. Heading F1N. A cryogenic pump comprises a chamber 22 containing a liquid helium or gaseous hydrogen cooled plate 30 on which the gases to be evacuated are condensed, and a plurality of baffles 42 arranged across the inlet 27 to the chamber so as to block the plate 30 from view from outside the chamber. The walls 23-26 of the chamber and the baffles 42 are cooled by liquid nitrogen circulated through a space 32 in contact with the upper wall 26. The chamber 22 may be rectangular, square or circular in cross-section. Three alternative constructions of the pumps, Figs. 2, 3 and 5 (not shown), are disclosed the primary differences residing in the disposition and number of baffles and cooled plates. |
