The device has circulating belts i.e. suction belts (11), for operating on a sheet (3), where the belts are in contact with the sheet by sheet contact surfaces. One of the contact surfaces is in contact with the sheet at an angle with respect to horizontals. The angle between the contact surfaces and the horizontals is varied in a sheet running direction (BLR). The belts are guided by sections of a suction plate. The suction plate is arranged between a front deflection wheel and a rear deflection wheel in the sheet running direction. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for guiding sheets (2) a method for cross-tightening of sheets.
