PURPOSE: A process for preparing polyethylene terephthalate is provided to lower the content of an oligomer compared with polyester obtained by a conventional manufacturing method and to additionally reduce the content of diethylene glycol. CONSTITUTION: A process for preparing polyethylene terephthalate comprises the steps of: adding an antimony compound catalyst, phosphoric acid-based thermal stabilizer, magnesium compound, and acetate compound to a low-molecular-weight polymer prepared by esterification of divalent terephthalic acids which are dibasic acid and ethylene glycol which is divalent alcohol; heating the mixture at 260-290 °C; and performing polycondensation for removing ethylene glycol which is divalent alcohol in high vacuum.
