<p>Process:- (I) (when Y=OH, oxidation with CrO3 gives Y=O) Hydrogenation is carried out at 1-120 atmos., temp. 80-170 deg.C, for 5-30 hrs. using Pt, Ru, Pd or Ni optionally in the presence of acid if there is no 3-alkoxy-DELTA2,5(10)-moiety present. R and R' = H or lower alkyl group R2 = lower alkyl group X and Y = alpha- or beta-OH or ketone Z = OH, lower alkoxy, or keto group indicates that the substituent attached to the steroid nucleus may be alpha- or beta-. The partial structures are those of steroids of the oestrane or pregnane series. indicates that the configuration at C-9 is beta. Cpds. of the 19-nor-5alpha,9beta,10alpha-oestrane series are anabolic agents and sedatives of the CNS. The compounds of the 19-nor-5alpha,9beta,10alpha-pregnane series are oral progestational agents useful in the control of fertility. They also reduce cholesterol level in the blood.</p> |
