Address labels are fixed to articles to be mailed in a labelling machine, the labelled articles being arranged in a shingled array, and when a change of town address occurs, a mark in a predetermined position on a label is photo-electrically sensed as the labels are fed to the labelling machine, a pin is set in a rotating delay device whereby when the article bearing the marked label reaches the shingled array, a normally operative stop is removed so that this article takes up an offset position relative to the shingled array. The arrangement enables the operator to easily distinguish when a change of town address has occurred and to collect batches of articles for bulk mailing. In a modified system, the delay device, instead of operating the stop, actuates a binding machine to bind the batch of articles. The presence of a mark in a second predetermined position may be used to stop the labelling machine and transport mechanisms, e.g. to enable a printing plate to be changed. |
