In a machine tool such as a lathe having a frame 10 with a rotatable work-holding spindle 12 and a plurality of cross-slides 14, 16 and 18, 20, adjustable cross-slide carriers being provided for each of the respective slides and which are mounted on the machine frame 10, each crossslide being movable transversely and parallel to the spindle axis and the tool-holders carried by the slides being movable thereon radially of the spindle axis. The cross-slides 14, 16 are movable on their respective carriers 48, transversely of the spindle axis, by way of T-slots 50 and are movable parallel to the spindle axis with their carriers by way of T-slots 46 in the frame 10 the slide carrier being clamped by T-bolts in their adjusted position. The cross-slides 18, 20 are mounted on carriers 60 which are pivotable transversely of the spindle axis on shafts 64, the cross-slide being adjustably movable parallel to the spindle axis by way of a T-slot 62 in the carrier 60. The slides are fluid-actuated to radially move the tool holder 30 towards and away from the spindle axis during a machining operation. The cutting tool 100 is clamped in the holder 30 by screws 90, 88 and the holder is held in the cross-slide by threaded engagement between the fluid actuator 36 of the slide and the tool-holder body 84.
