[Also in Division G1] A mechanism by means of which the gimbal system of a gyroscopic artificial horizon may be caged comprises a caging member 9 for engagement with the gimbal system, and which adopts a release or caging position in dependence on whether a transmission rod 1 to which it is coupled by a spring 6 is in a first or a second axial position defined by a latching mechanism 12 which locates the rod in the first and second positions alternately upon successive unidirectional pulling movements of the rod. The latching mechanism 12 comprises a plate 14 pivoted on a pin 15 and urged to rotate in a clockwise direction, as viewed in Figure 2, by means of a spring 16, the plate having two indentations 18, 19 joined by a cam surface 20, the rod 1 having a projecting pin 11 which engages with the indentations to locate the rod in its first or second position the arrangement being such that if the rod 1 is pulled from the position shown wherein the pin 11 is located in the indentation 18, the pin 11 will ride along the cam surface 20 pivoting the plate 14 until it engages in the indentation 19 against the edge of a tongue 21. In this position the gimbal system is caged. A further pull on the rod will cause the pin 11 to ride along the edge of the tongue 21 and under its end 22 which is bent out of the plane of the plate 14, so that release of the rod 1 will then allow the pinn 11 to pass under the plate to engage the indentation 18. The rod 1 carries a rotatable knob 2 which may be used to adjust an aircraft symbol mask 5 by means of gears 3, 4. |
