1,228,092. Leakproof primary cell. VARTA G.m.b.H. 13 Oct., 1969 [16 Oct., 1968], No. 50274/69. Heading H1B. In a leakproof primary cell with a separator layer which comprises a thickened electrolyte disposed between the negative electrode and the depolarizer, the thickener consists of or contains granules of an anion exchanger alone or in admixture with a cation exchanger, which granules can absorb at least 3 times their dry weight of water, and preferably have a particle size between 15 and 70 Á. Suitable anion exchange material is a styrene polymer crosslinked with not more than 3 mol. per cent of divinyl benzene having in the ring substituents containing quaternary ammonium groups. Suitable cation exchangers are those disclosed in Specification 1,170,480. The separator layer may be produced on the inside of a zinc can by applying a suspension of the ion exchangers in a binder solution in the form of a film, and then removing the solvent for the binder. The binder is suitably a rubber, e.g. polychloroprene, polyisobutylene, or a nitrile rubber such as a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer. Alternatively a coherent layer of the ion-exchange granules can be formed on the zinc can by applying a suspension of the granules in an organic liquid which is a solvent for the granules, and then removing the solvent. In another method a solution of the binder may first be applied as a thin film on the can and the ion exchange granules can then be dusted on before the solvent is removed. A depolarizer mix comprising MnO 2 , carbon black, ZnO, and an aqueous solution of ZnCl 2 , and subsequently a carbon rod is pressed into the internally coated zinc can. |
