1,259,434. Emulsion polymerization initiators. FMC CORP. 29 Jan., 1970 [30 Jan., 1969], No. 4298/70. Heading C3P. The invention comprises an emulsion polymerization process utilizing an initiator selected from ammonium and alkali metal peroxydiphosphate salts in which the cation may be mixed for polymerizing monomers and monomer mixtures selected from vinyl acetate, vinyl acetate/dibutyl maleate, vinyl acetate/dibutyl fumarate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, styrene, styrene/butadiene (or other comonomers), lower alkyl acrylates or methacrylates, and 2-chloro-1,3-butadiene. The initiator is used in an amount of 0À01 to 10% by weight of the monomers and may be used in conjunction with other initiators such as a peroxydisulphate salt and/or reducing agents. Examples describe the emulsion polymerization of the above monomers and monomer mixtures, using initiators of: tetrapotassium peroxydiphosphate (K 4 P 2 O 8 ); K 4 P 2 O 8 and K 2 S 2 O 8 ; K 2 H 2 P 2 O 8 ; (NH 4 ) 4 P 2 O 8 ; a K 4 P 2 O 8 /Na 2 S 2 O 5 /FeSO 4 redox system; and a K 4 P 2 O 8 /K 2 S 2 O 5 mixture together with conventional emulsifiers, inhibitors (tertdodecyl-mercaptan and short stoppers (phenolbeta naphthylamine and hydroquinone). |
