The method involves providing a current limit value to an upstream switch (3), and opening another upstream switch (2) using the current limit value when the current limit value is exceeded for a predetermined time (t2). The two switches are connected together with respect to a signal. The latter switch is signalized by the former switch using a connection line (6) so that current is interrupted. The current limit value is increased and/or the time of the latter switch is extended when the former switch is signalized and the current is interrupted.
