An apparatus for continuously extracting fats from organic material comprises at least one vertically disposed pre-extractor vessel 10, having a stirrer 12 and outlets for removing fatrich solvent 16, which is connected by at least one conduit at its lowermost end with one end of an inclined counter-flow extractor vessel 17, said conduit permitting the passage of solvent from the counter-flow extractor to the preextractor vessel and permitting the flow of organic material from the pre-extractor to the counter-flow extractor, said extractor having inlets for the solvent 20, 21 and means for transporting the organic material in counter flow to the solvent, and being connected at the other end to centrifuge 26 which is connected to at least one counter-flow evaporator 28, having an inlet 35 for steam to dissolve the solvent residue, an outlet 32 for the steam and dissolved solvent mixture and means for transporting the organic material through the counter-flow evaporator. The means for transporting organic material in counter-flow to the solvent in the extractor may comprise a rotatable shaft 18 having a helical blade 22 extending the length of the shaft having a plurality of apertures therein permitting the passage of organic matter and solvent through the apertures. |
