A method of assessing a temperature on a remote side 12 of a barrier 10 comprises applying a temperature measuring device 22 to a near side 14 of the barrier. The device comprises a first temperature sensor 24 in contact with the near side of the barrier, a second temperature sensor 26 spaced from the first temperature sensor, and a thermally insulating material 28 disposed between the first and second sensors. The device calculates the remote temperature based upon a thermal conductivity property Ub of the barrier, a thermal conductivity property Um of the thermally insulating material, a first temperature reading obtained from the first sensor, and a second temperature reading obtained from the second sensor. The remote temperature may be the temperature of water 18 in a hot water tank having a copper wall 16 that is thermally insulated 20. If the temperature of the water is known then this may be used to determine the relative thermal conductivity or absolute insulation value of the thermal insulation of the tank. A hot water cylinder and temperature measuring device are also claimed.
|
