A process for producing 1-cyano-1,3-butadiene comprises catalytically dehydrogenating in the vapour phase a cyanobutene at elevated temperatures. The process is applicable to all isomeric cyanobutenes, but preferred is 1-cyanobutene-2. The catalyst may be any known in the art as being suitable for dehydrogenation; preferred catalysts are bismuth phosphomolybdate supported on silica, mixed ZnO/CuO modified by, e.g. up to 2% by weight of a sodium compound, and cobalt molybdate supported on alumina. The ZnO/CuO catalyst is preferably in a pelleted form, pelleted, e.g. by the aid of graphite. The dehydrogenation is preferably conducted by leading the gaseous cyanobutenes over the catalyst, preferably mixed with an inert diluent gas such as air or nitrogen, and using a contact time of 1-10 seconds. The temperature is preferably between 300-550 DEG C., particularly 350-450 DEG C. |
