Process for industrial synthesis of N-[2-(7-methoxy-naphthalen-1-yl)- ethyl]-acetamide (agomelatine) (I) comprises reacting (7-methoxy-1-naphtyl)acetonitrile, which is subjected to a reduction by hydrogen in the presence of Raney nickel in medium containing acetic anhydride in a polar protic medium to give (I) that is isolated as a solid. - ACTIVITY : Antidepressant; Hypnotic; Cardiovascular-Gen.; Gastrointestinal-Gen.; CNS-Gen.; Muscular-Gen.; Eating-Disorders-Gen.; Anorectic. - MECHANISM OF ACTION : 5-Hydroxytryptamine 2C receptor antagonist.
