PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display apparatus and a driving method thereof are provided to control video data or a backlight dimming process by dividing a moving picture and a still image. CONSTITUTION: Inputted video data is divided into a constant block(S10). A block of the video data which has a brightness value greater than a predetermined value is detected(S20). A brightness contour of a corresponding block is generated(S30). The location and the brightness value of the corresponding block are saved(S40). Block image information of a current frame and a previous frame are compared(S50). A brightness variation range is determined compared to a predetermined variation range(S60). Control information is generated from a determined still image when the brightness variation range is the predetermined variation range or greater(S70). The video data and a backlight according to the still image is controlled(S75).
