发明名称 RESILIENT SPACER FOR ELECTRODE JOINTS
摘要
1,215,103. Arc electrodes. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 11 March, 1969 [14 March, 1968], No. 12807/69. Heading H5M. In order to maintain good electrical contact between the adjacent end faces of joined arc electrode sections under conditions of thermal stress a resilient "expanded" graphite spacer is interposed between the end faces. Graphite electrode sections 10 and 14 are joined together by a convential nipple 12 and a recess provided in one or both end faces 22, 24 of the electrode sections contains an inner ring 16 of "edge" oriented graphite and an outer ring 20 of "flat" oriented graphite. The rings may be formed from spaced expanded graphite segments. The edge oriented graphite is more resilient and has a greater electrical conductivity in a direction parallel to the electrode axis than the flat oriented graphite. The expanded graphite may be expanded up to 25 times in the direction of the C-cryatollographic axis by conventional techniques or between 80-200 times by the method disclosed in Specification 1,049,588. Expanded graphite particles may be compressed by an amount which does not completely destroy their resiliency to form sheets. Metal powders or filaments, fibre glass, clay and up to 10% binder may be incorporated in the expanded graphite provided it does not impair its electrical conductivity or resilience.
