PURPOSE: A composition containing Allium fistulosum L. extract is provided to suppress alpha-glucosidase and to reduce blood glucose. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating diabetes contains Allium fistulosum L. root extract as an active ingredient. The Allium fistulosum L. extract is isolated using water, spirit, low alcohol of 1-4 carbon atoms, or mixture solvent thereof. The pharmaceutical composition contains 0.1-50 weight% of Allium fistulosum L. extract. A health food for preventing and treating diabetes contains Allium fistulosum L. extract as an active ingredient. The health food in the form of a powder, granule, tablet, capsule, syrup, or beverage.
