<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate complex character string selection processing by a combination of easily creatable commands instead of creation of complex selection processing. <P>SOLUTION: A character string selection device 1 inputs selection target information 9a and command information 9b. The character string selection device 1 has selection range holding means 5 capable of holding plural selection range sets each having zero or more selection range elements. The character string selection device 1 applies selection range generation rules composed of regular expressions to a selection range set based on the selection target information 9a by first selection range generation means 4, thereby generating new selection range sets.
