<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an enzyme activity sensor having advantages such as small scale of operation, speed, sensitivity, specificity, and ease of production. <P>SOLUTION: The enzyme activity sensor has a planar waveguide containing a substrate for the enzyme. In the enzyme activity sensor, (1) the substrate contains a detectable label, or (2) the substrate is modified so that the activity of the enzyme can modify the substrate to include the detectable label. The invention also relates to a method for detecting the enzymatic activity. The method includes: (a) a step for exposing the planar waveguide of the enzyme activity sensor to a sample to be tested under a condition allowing the enzyme to act on the substrate; (b) a step for irradiating the planar waveguide to form an attenuation field; and (c) a step for examining the attenuation field as for the presence of the detectable label. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
