ANNULAR SUPPORT STRUCTURE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surgical support structure, operating with an optional anastomosis device.

SOLUTION: A rigid support structure is adapted for use in conjunction with a circular endoscopic stapling instrument 10 having a staple cartridge assembly 14 and an anvil assembly 16. The support structure maintains an obtained anastomotic lumen in an open condition. The support structure includes a rigid annular ring 102 configured and adapted to substantially overlap at least one of annular arrangement of the staple cartridge assembly and allow penetration of a staple. This annular ring includes: an outer annular wall; an inner annular wall spaced in radial direction inside the outer annular wall; an upper wall connecting the outer annular wall and the inner annular wall to each other; a lower wall spaced at a distance from the upper wall and connecting the outer annular wall and the inner annular wall to each other; and a wound closing material.
