A randomly dispersed mass of fibres is made into a filter by depositing a predetermined mass of, e.g. cotton fibres onto a conveyor 10 which transfers them to a belt 11 where they are compressed into a generally rectangular mat by a pressure belt 12 as they are carried towards a forming cylinder 13. The mat passes through a slot 14 in the cylinder 13 onto a rotating mandrel 15 to form a cylindrical mass of fibres. A piston 16 is then moved axially by actuation of a cylinder 55 to strip the material from the mandrel 15 into the shell S which has been clamped against a wall 47 by actuation of cylinder 59. The slide 57 and supporting plate 56 for the shell S are then retracted and an ejector 17 actuated simultaneously to eject the loaded shell onto a chute 18 (Fig. 2). |
