When a state in which fuel is injected at a reference target rail pressure found from a reference target rail pressure map applied to a case where the environmental conditions and operational conditions that influence the operational state of an engine are in general standard states turns into a state in which combustion is deteriorated due to insufficient preheating in a cylinder by fuel injected by pilot injection, a target rail pressure is set by correcting the reference target rail pressure by pressure reduction. Consequently, the density of thermal energy in a combustion field of the fuel injected by the pilot injection is increased to thereby increase the temperature of the combustion field, thus achieving sufficient preheating in the cylinder and avoiding an accidental fire of fuel injected by main injection.
