The method involves arranging the buttons (7) in the buttonholes formed in the cloth (3), such that one button is arranged perpendicularly to the end face of the other button, and arranging a needle (5) between the upper and lower needle bars (11,41). The invariable mutual position of the button and the cloth is set according to the number of stitches, for closing the buttonholes. The button is moved towards the cloth in the vertical movement axis of the needle for closing the buttonholes such that a neck portion is formed extending in the direction of button.
