<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lathe equipped with a tailstock movable to a position opposed to a main spindle and to a position not opposed to the main spindle avoiding the facing. <P>SOLUTION: The lathe is rotatably equipped with the main spindle 9 having a chuck 7 capable of universally holding one end side of a workpiece, and equipped with the tailstock 39 having a workpiece supporting member 61 capable of universally supporting the another end side of the workpiece, movable in an advancing/separating manner to/from the spindle 9. The tailstock 39 is equipped with a supporting stand 63 supporting the workpiece supporting member 61, movable to the position opposed to the main spindle 9 and to the position not opposed to the main spindle avoiding the facing.
