An apparatus for the continuous manufacture of laminated articles having a plastics foam e.g. of polyurethane sandwiched between and bonded to outer sheets of facing material e.g. of paper, wood, plastics, metal, rubber, asbestos, paperboard or plasterboard comprises a foamdispensing means for applying a liquid mixture of foam-forming ingredients to one of the sheets of facing material and a conveying means for causing the two sheets of facing material to move in parallel relationship with each other while formation and setting of the foam takes place, the said conveying means being characterized in that it exerts a predetermined constant pressure on the foam and consists of upper and lower parts at least one of which comprises at least one movable endless chain 1 and carried therupon a series of slats 2 located mutually parallel and transversely to the direction of motion of the chain or chains in the plane of said motion, the slats being independently. carried upon the endless chain or chains by means whereby each slat is yieldingly urged outwardly therefrom with respect to the aforesaid plane of motion. In a preferred embodiment, the slats of each part of the conveying means are carried on two endless chains, one located to each side of the series of slats. The means whereby each slat is carried upon the links of the chain or chains may comprise one or more leaf springs attached at one extremity to one of a series of transverse bars 3, which are carried upon the two chains between alternate slats and at the other extremity to the slat, or attached at both extremities to such transverse bars; alternatively, the said means may comprise adjustable helical springs 18, or hydraulic pistons and cylinders. When only one part of the conveying means comprises such a series of slats, the other part may be an endless belt optionally backed by a platen or a similar series of slats 20 rigidly mounted upon a chain or chains 19. At least one of the facing sheets may be preformed to have lateral flanges or ribs. |
