<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material for a solid scintillator including garnet structure oxide which has high transparency and is reduced in heterophases, and a solid scintillator using the same. <P>SOLUTION: The material for a solid scintillator includes the garnet structure oxide represented by the following general formula. General Formula: (Gd<SB POS="POST">1-α-β-γ</SB>Tb<SB POS="POST">α</SB>Lu<SB POS="POST">β</SB>Ce<SB POS="POST">γ</SB>)<SB POS="POST">3</SB>(Al<SB POS="POST">1-x</SB>Ga<SB POS="POST">x</SB>)<SB POS="POST">a</SB>O<SB POS="POST">b</SB>, wherein 0<α≤0.5, 0<β≤0.5, 0.0001≤γ≤0.1, 0<x<1, 4.8≤a≤5.2, and 11.6≤b≤12.4.
