Provided are: a sealing material in which a core material can be surely placed at a desired position; and a process for producing the sealing material. This process for producing a sealing material is a process of covering a core material (10) with a rubber material in a molding space (110) in a mold (100) to produce a sealing material (1) comprising the core material (10) and a cover part (20) that covers the core material (10) and comprises the rubber material, wherein the process comprises: providing the mold (100) which comprises a longitudinal positioning section (210, 220) for holding the core material (10) at a predetermined position in the longitudinal direction in the molding space (110) and a lateral positioning section (300) for holding the core material (10) at a predetermined position in the lateral direction in the molding space (110); holding the core material (10), which is composed of a harder material than the rubber material, at the predetermined position in the longitudinal direction and the predetermined position in the lateral direction by means of the longitudinal positioning section (200) and the lateral positioning section (300) and, at the same time, placing the rubber material, which has been molten, around the core material (10) in the molding space (110) in the mold (100); and subsequently hardening the rubber material around the core material (10).
