1,221,048. Modified polyphenylene oxide. SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 9 June, 1969 [7 June, 1968], No. 29168/69. Headings C3P and C3R. Polyphenylene oxide is modified by catalytically polymerizing a vinyl ether in the presence of the polyphenylene oxide, using a Lewis acid catalyst as the polymerization catalyst. The modification increases the resistance to thermal oxidation. In examples, xylene solutions of poly - 2,6 - dimethyl - 1,4 - phenylene oxide, poly - 2,6 - dichloro - 1,4 - phenylene oxide, poly - 2,6 - dialkyl - 1,4 - phenylene oxide and poly - 2,6 - dimethoxy - 1,4 - phenylene oxide, are mixed with vinylisobutylether, vinylphenylether, vinylethylether and vinyl-n-butylether, and the vinyl ethers are polymerized by heating using as catalysts a boron trifluoride-diethyl ether complex, tin tetrachloride, a boron trifluoride-phenol complex and boron trifluoride gas.
