An operating device for movable members such as doors and windows comprises forcetransmitting means operatively linked to the movable member through a lost motion device and also linked to a locking bolt on the member through a further transmission system which is operated by part of the movement of the force-transmitting means to release and engage the bolt, the other part of the movement being used to move the member. As shown in Fig. 1, a pivotally movable window 11 is supported in a fixed frame 12 and is operable through a flexible drive member which may include a rigid tube-like casing 13 housing a flexible drive cable 14 which can transmit both tension and compression. The casing 13 is terminated adjacent the window 11 in a terminal member 15 fixed to a horizontal part of the frame 12 and the end of the cable 14 carries a forked member 16 for coupling to the window 11. The central fitting 21 consists of three parallel apertures which are housed partly within a hollow part of the terminal member 15 when the window is closed. The central aperture receives a guide pin 22 mounted on a slide block 23 (see Fig. 5, not shown) having a projecting plate 24 adapted to be received by the forked member 16 and coupled thereto by means of a crosspin and the other two apertures receive guide pins 25 carried by the block 23. The ends of the guide pins 25 are connected to flexible force-transmitting members 26 running through bores in the tubular casing parts 17, the other ends of the members 26 being coupled to actuating means for the bolts 19 mounted in the drive units 18 which contain a rack 28 and pinion 29. In a modification, the casings 17 are replaced with tubular channels 33 (Fig. 6, not shown) formed in the window frame 11. The bolts 19 may thus be connected directly to the ends of the force-transmitting members 26 and the drive unit 18 is omitted. |
