<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lean burn engine capable of largely improving fuel economy performance, by largely improving heat efficiency. <P>SOLUTION: This lean burn engine 1 includes an engine body having a combustion chamber 17, and a control means 100 for controlling operation of the engine body. At least a part of a surface for partitioning the combustion chamber 17 is constituted of combustion chamber heat insulation layers 61-65 arranged on the surface side of a base material. The engine body is set to 20≤ε≤50 in the geometric compression ratio ε.
