PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device that has a limited wavelength band, and a backlight and a lighting element for use therein.

SOLUTION: The lighting element includes: a light emitting diode element 1; a filter member 3 for selectively transmitting only a particular range of wavelengths of light output from the light emitting diode element 1; an incident angle limiting member 2 for limiting light from the light emitting diode element 1 incident on the filter member 3 to a predetermined range of incident angles; a diffusion member 4 for diffusing the light transmitted through the filter member 3; and a lens member 6 having an optical axis on which the diffusion member 4 is positioned.
