<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method for controlling a vehicle capable of effectively balancing restart of an engine with increase of braking force while respecting intention of starting of a driver even when a time to perform stop keeping control and a time to perform restart of an engine at least partially overlaps each other, in a vehicle performing automatic stop and automatic restart of an engine. <P>SOLUTION: In vehicular sliding-down prevention control during engine stop, when driver's intention to start is determined to be present (affirmative determination in S15), restart of an engine is started (S16), and thereafter brake pressurization is performed up to control target pressure by usable power or less (S18).
