<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow an increase in the number of tubes per a unit area in a cross section in a shell even if a titanium material is used for manufacturing. <P>SOLUTION: The shell and tube type heat exchanger includes: a tube (40) in which a first heat exchange fluid (51) flows, a shell (20) which houses the tube (40) and allows a second heat exchange fluid (52) to flow outside the tube (40); a plurality of baffles (41) arranged along the length direction of the shell (20) at proper intervals, for alternately closing a half of the cross section, in the shell (20); and a tube plate (44) which holds both ends of the tube (40). Each of the baffles (41) is bonded and fixed to a rod member (47) extending in the same direction as the length direction of the tube (40) using an inorganic glass-based sealing agent (70).
