<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make an article hard to collapse, in a transfer device configured to hold the article. <P>SOLUTION: The transfer device 29 is mounted on a stacker crane to move a package into and out of a package storage shelf while holding both sides of the package. The transfer device 29 includes a device body 31 mountable on the stacker crane, a clamp unit 33, a front opening/closing drive unit 60a, a rear opening/closing drive unit 60b, and a moving drive unit 61. The clamp unit 33 is disposed on the device body 31 so as to be movable forward and backward relative to the device body 31 and also to be openable/closeable to a close position for holding the package and an open position separated from the package. The front opening/closing drive unit 60a and the rear opening/closing unit 60b are disposed on the device body 31 separately from each other in longitudinal X-direction that is a transfer direction, and drive the clamp unit 33 to be opened/closed.
