An endoscope system (100) comprises: an optical fiber cable (31) and an electric cable (32a) through which pixel information that has been output from a light-receiving unit (28) is transmitted; an image processing unit (42) which generates an image on the basis of the pixel information transmitted through the optical fiber cable (31) or the pixel information transmitted through the electric cable (32a); and a control unit (55) which enables the display of the image generated in the image processing unit (42) on a display unit (71) and which can determine whether any transmission failure occurs in the optical fiber cable (31) or not and selects either one of the pixel information transmitted through the optical fiber cable (31) and the pixel information transmitted through the electric cable (32a) as pixel information to be processed in the image processing unit (42) depending on the presence or absence of the transmission failure in the optical fiber cable (31).
