<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyimide that is colorless, transparent and highly soluble in an organic solvent and is hardly discolored at a high temperature and to provide a novel monomer acting as a raw material of the polyimide. <P>SOLUTION: A tetracarboxylic dianhydride represented by general formula (1), which is derived from an aromatic diamine bearing an electron-withdrawing group and 1,2,4-cyclohexanetricarboxylic acid-1,2-anhydride, is used as a monomer. The aimed polyimide is synthesized from the monomer and various diamines.
