PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an effective vaccine for immunizing susceptible mammal against β hemolytic streptococcus, and to provide a method for administering the vaccine.

SOLUTION: The new vaccines for using against β hemolytic streptococcus colonization or infection are disclosed. The vaccines contain an immunogenic amount of a variant of streptococcal C5a peptidase (SCP). A method of protecting a susceptible mammal against β hemolytic streptococcus colonization or infection by administering such a vaccine is also disclosed. Enzymatically inactive SCP, and polynucleotides encoding the SCP proteins are further disclosed.
