<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scribing method and a scribing wheel in which scribing start is smooth, crosspoint skip can be prevented, and the quality of a cutting surface of a brittle material is excellent, when cutting a brittle material substrate. <P>SOLUTION: Mutually adjacent grooves 21, 22 are provided along a circumferential ridgeline 11 of the scribing wheel 10 so as to have such an interval that the two grooves are not brought into contact with each other simultaneously when being pressure-contacted with the brittle material substrate. Test scribing is performed as long as a circumferential length by using the scribing wheel 10, and a distance d1 from a contact point with the substrate to a point where a scribe line is formed is detected. Dummy scribing is performed as long as a discriminated distance d1, while keeping the scribing wheel at the same rotation angle as that at the finish time of the test scribing, and scribing is performed while keeping the scribing wheel at a rotation angle just after the dummy scribing.
