<p>Apparatus for consolidating one of more webs 1000 containing thermoplastic material by plastic deformation comprises an energy source for increasing temperature at predetermined regions of the web 1000, and defining between first 3000 and second 2000 anvils a web nip gap. The gap is defined by circumferential ribs of a tubular anvil element 3000 comprising an anvil element support structure 1100. The tubular anvil element 3000 may be flexible and may comprise a helical spring, shim rings on a flexible core or bellowed, corrugated or finned flexible tubes. A damper element 3700 may be located between the anvil element 3000 and its support structure 1100 and the damper element has an elasticity higher than the tubular anvil element 3000. The apparatus may produce a web comprising a plurality of consolidation regions (110, Fig 1A) having a non-circular elliptic shape and an indented surface comprising ellipsoidal of frusto-ellipsoidal indentations.
