Ionizing of supersonic gas streams for gas - reactions

The gas to be ionised is fed to a pipe jet opening into a decompression chamber and thence to a recompression collector. Current is fed to the device via spring loaded conducting shafts fitted to an axial electrode. A predischarge region is established to eliminate effects of pressure and gas nature on the unit discharge characteristics. The predischarge auxiliary electrode is kept at a higher potential than the potential between the electrodes and the mass of the device, the principal discharge occuring in the shock wave region of the recompression section.
