1320741 Treating coal UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 17 Aug 1970 [18 Aug 1969] 39517/70 Heading C5E Liquid products are obtained from coal by (i) contacting coal particles with a first solvent (e.g. an aromatic hydrocarbon or tetrahydronaphthalene) under extraction conditions and hydrogen pressure, (ii) separating from the effluent at least a portion of the first solvent and a stream containing coal extract in admixture with at least a portion of unconverted coal and ash-forming components, and (iii) contacting the stream with a second solvent selective for hydrogen-rich components selected from aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones and cyclohexanes, separately withdrawing a liquid extract comprising hydrogen-rich components free of unconverted coal and ash-forming components and a liquid phase comprising hydrogenlean components.
