Class 44 A lock comprises a stationary casing having a rotatable barrel carrying a toothed wheel or equivalent in mesh with a rack on the bolt, and a series of variably settable locking elements capable of being released by means of a key having within its shank variably settable wards, projected from the shank after the key has been inserted, and engaging and displacing the locking elements. As shown in Fig. 1, a barrel 29, with a rear extension 27, is rotatably mounted in a casing. The key, Fig. 15, which is of flat box-like form, is inserted through a rectangular opening 1a, Fig. 1, in the barrel 29, and contains a number of toothed racks 43, Fig. 15, secured in predetermined positions to a sliding plate 50, which, after the key has been inserted, is projected from the shank of the key by operating a sliding band 33. The plate 50 and associated racks pass into a keyway 2, Fig. 1, and the racks engage toothed segments S pivoted tumblers 11, lifting the heads 11 a of the tumblers out of slots 26a formed in the bolt 26 of the lock. The bolt 26 can then be moved by rotation of the barrel through a pinion 16, Fig. 7, meshing with a rack on the bolt. The pinion 16 has slots through which the heads of the tumblers 11 project. A number of weights 7, Fig. 1, sliding on fixed rods 8, bear on noses 12 of the segments S. A brake 9 adapted to hold down the weights 7 is connected to a pair of sliding rods 10 which have at their rear ends a finger piece 25. Sliding in the extension 27 of the barrel is yoke 22, the forward end of which is adapted to engage the upper parts of the tumblers 11 when the yoke is pushed in against the action of a spring 14. By this means the bolt can be operated from inside by pushing in the yoke 22 so that its end 13 lifts the tumblers, and then rotating the yoke. The tumblers can be held raised and inoperative by pulling out the finger piece 25, so that the weights 7 are held down, and holding it out by a wedge. The key,'Fig. 15, is in the form of a shallow box, the front wall having holes 34 into which project pins 5, Fig. 2, on the plate 3 in the barrel when the key is inserted, displacing spring- pressed plungers, 42, Fig. 16, housed in a compartment at the front end of the key. Displacement of the plungers 42 brings into alignment transverse grooves in the under sides thereof, and a rod 37, which normally blocks the opening in the front of the key, can then be lifted into the aligned grooves by the chamfered front ends of the key racks 43 on operation of the sliding band 33, Fig. 15. The racks are held on the plate 50 by means of a member having a transversely serrated lower surface engaging the teeth of the racks and secured to the plate 50 by a spring pin; the racks can thus be set to suit the lock tumbler setting.</p> |
