1286339 Biopsy instruments H G BENDER R N PAGE and L D WOLD 15 July 1970 [15 July 1969] 34400/70 Heading A5R A biopsy instrument comprises an elongated outer tubular cutter 12, an inner tubular cutter 13 extending partly within cutter 12 and rotatable about its longitudinal axis within cutter 12, the cutters each having an orifice at one end, which orifices may be brought into registration, and means connecting a vacuum source to the interior of cutter 13 for drawing tissue into said orifices, the tissue then being cut off on relative rotation of cutters 12 and 13 and sucked away from the orifices. The orifices preferably extend around the peripheries of the cutters for less than half their circumference and the distal end 31 of cutter 13 is urged against the distal end 19 of cutter 12 by means of a coil spring. Cutter 13 may be continuously rotated in one direction or oscillated about its axis to obtain a succession of tissue samples, the cutter 13 being rotated by an air or vacuum operated motor or an electric motor (15), Fig. 3 (not shown), which plugs into the side of a housing (11) of the instrument, the motor (15) being energised via a foot operated switch. The cutter 13 is connected with the vacuum source via a length of flexible hose contained in an extension of housing (11), the hose normally being closed by a spring-urged clamp acting on the exterior of the hose and being opened on pressing a button (16) on housing (11). |
