[Also in Division H4] A statistical display apparatus for displaying information about the magnitude of a variable comprises means for classifying the magnitude into one of a number of ranges and means for feeding a charge to a capacitor each time a sample falls in a corresponding range, means for periodically removing part of the charge on each of the capacitors and display means for displaying the magnitude of the charges on each of the capacitors. The input signal on line 46 is classified into one of eleven ranges by classifier 45 which may be as described in Specification 1,166,388. Timing generator 42 applies pulses to stepper 43 which enables in turn eleven coincidence circuits 48, also receiving the outputs from the classifier 45. The marked output produces a single pulse on lead 49 to close switch 33 and apply a charging pulse from source 34 to the appropriate one of a bank of capacitors, the corresponding relay contact 20, 21, 22 &c. being closed at the correct instant by switch control unit 40. Only one capacitor in each scanning cycles receives a charging pulse, all the others may receive a discharging pulse by closure of switch 35. At the same instant the charge on a capacitor is being adjusted it is also connected over lead 29 via a modulating switch 39 to a C.R.T. 37. The switch 39 is controlled by the generator 42 and connects the C.R.T. input to earth between the successive operations of the switches 20, 21 &c. The charges on the capacitors are therefore displayed on the C.R.T. as indicated. Instead of discharging the capacitors in each cycle, the charges may be accumulated for a set period from a constant current source so that the charge increases linearly rather than exponentially. A part of the charge on each capacitor is removed in each cycle. A chart recorder may be connected to line 29 in place of, or as well as, the C.R.T. 37. A signal from the coincidence circuits 48 may pass on lead 50 to the C.R.T. to indicate by brightening the beam, which capacitor is receiving the charge.
