An engine of the trochoidal type has a passage 13 between an openings 14, 15 communicating with a compression space 11 and an induction space 10 whereby a proportion of the air, or fuel-and-air mixture, in the space 11 flows into the space 10 so as cause turbulence and hence better mingling of the fuel with the air. The opening 15 is at one end of a bore in an end-wall of the housing 1, which bore is either perpendicular or oblique relative to the inner face of said wall. A shut-off device 12 may be coupled to a throttle flap in the inlet port 2 so that the device is closed automatically, when the engine is at full-load. In an engine having a plurality of pistons the space 11 associated with each piston is connected by a passage, which is similar to the passage 13, to the space 10 associated with an adjacent piston.
