<p>Muconic acid and its derivatives are prepared by the oxidative cleavage of ortho diphenols opt. subst. in the nucleus esp. with alkyl radicals. The oxidising agent is nickel peroxide and 1.2 to 2 times the stoichiometric quantity is used. The aq. reaction medium is made alkaline by the addition of alkali or alkali earth hydroxides and the normality is adjusted to 0.3-10. The reaction time is quicker than when monoperacetic acid is used as the oxidising agent and yields are higher than when ozone is used. In an example muconic acid is obtained in 64% yield from pyrocatechol.</p> |
