<p>Extended Ti-phosphate crystals, mean diameter 0.05 - 1 micron, length at least 5X, particularly more than 20X the diameter, are prepared by reacting a 0.5 - 5 molar orthophosphoric acid solution with a source of titanium (pref. titanyl chloride or -sulphate, TiCl4, Ti oxide, -tetraalkylate with 1 - 10C atoms per alkyl) at 225 - 400 degrees C after autogenous pressure for at least 15 mins. (pref. more than 2 hours), the phosphate/Ti ratio being between 1 and 35. The whiskers are recovered by filtration etc. Useful as reinforcement, for instance in polypropylene. The molar ratio between Ti and phosphate is particularly between 0.35 and 1.8.</p> |
