PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high variable power zoom lens made thin when it is collapsed and having high performance, and an imaging apparatus using the same. SOLUTION: The zoom lens has a first positive lens group G1, a second negative lens group G2, a third positive lens group G3 and a fourth positive lens group G4. When varying power from a wide angle end to a telephoto end, the first lens group G1, the second lens group G2, the third lens group G3 and the fourth lens group G4 are respectively moved so that the space between the first lens group G1 and the second lens group G2 may be increased, the space between the second lens group G2 and the third lens group G3 may be decreased and the space between the third lens group G3 and the fourth lens group G4 may be increased. The zoom lens satisfies a conditional expression (1) concerning the lateral magnification of the second lens group at the wide angle end, and a conditional expression (2) concerning the ratio of the focal length of an entire system at the wide angle end to that at the telephoto end.
