A canister vacuum cleaner having a retractable collection hose comprises a hose storage conduit extending from the air inlet into the canister. The collection hose is slidably disposed within the hose storage conduit so as to be movable along the hose storage conduit for extension and retraction of the hose. A coupling releasably affixes the collection hose in an extended position. Suction pressure of the vacuum cleaner is used to draw the hose into the stowed position within the hose storage conduit.
