<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a horizontal type automatic welding apparatus capable of correctly and reliably butting both ends in the circumferential direction of a workpiece bent in a cylindrical shape to each other, easily taking out the welded workpiece, preventing wastage of a mandrel and clamp plates or the like, damages of the workpiece or the like when taking out the workpiece, and freely setting the lowering position of the clamp plates according to the thickness of the workpiece. <P>SOLUTION: In the horizontal type automatic welding apparatus, both ends in the circumferential direction of a cylindrical workpiece W supported by a mandrel 2 are clamped in a butted condition by a clamp mechanism 6. The clamp mechanism 6 has a pair of opposing clamp plates 18 which are urged downwardly by an elastic body 19, and abutted in an inclined posture on upper surfaces of both ends in the circumferential direction of the workpiece W.
